Hammer filmed their own take on the werewolf legend back in 1961, but it had no relation to the Universal Wolf Man character, or to their earlier Werewolf of London, because of Universal’s copyright to the characters.
Hammer’s film, "Curse of the Werewolf", set in what seems to be 17th or 18th century Spain, starred a young Oliver Reed as the cursed offspring of a servant-girl raped by an imprisoned madman. Reed’s character’s curse begins with his birth, and during full moon night’s his foster-father, a kindly priest, keeps him in a locked room. During the course of the film, Reed, now a young man, is accidentally freed on one of his transformation nights and goes on a murderous rampage, only to be shot and killed by his foster-father.
There are no other werewolves in the film, and no mention of the passing of the curse by a werewolf biting and infecting someone else.
Reed’s performance is intense and well-done, and the werewolf makeup by Hammer’s Roy Ashton is scarily effective.
